What amalgam removal actually costs
When people ask me what amalgam removal costs, they usually expect a complicated answer. It isn't one.
You pay for the new filling. The removal of the old one, under the SMART protocol, is included. There's no separate "removal fee" added on top, and no extra charge for the protective equipment.
Treatment Price per tooth
Small white filling, including amalgam removal £199
Medium white filling, including amalgam removal £299
Large white filling, including amalgam removal £329
Ceramic inlay or onlay (for larger fillings)£895
First appointment: Signature 18-Point Biological & Wellness Discovery, x-rays included £169
Which price will I pay?
Most of the fillings I replace are medium, at £299. I'm fair about it. Small is small, large is large, and if a filling sits in between I'll tell you which it is before we start, not after.
Large and small are the exceptions. A large one is usually an old filling that has been patched over the years, or one that takes up most of the tooth.
White fillings or inlays?
For most teeth, a modern white composite is the right choice. The materials have come on a long way. The composite we use is BPA-free and free of the classic monomers older composites relied on, and I'm very happy with how it performs.
I'll suggest a ceramic inlay or onlay when a filling is big enough that the tooth needs more support than a filling can give. Some patients ask for inlays for other reasons, and we can talk that through. But I don't generally recommend them purely on the grounds of material, because I think the latest composites are genuinely good.
What a typical treatment costs
Most people who come to me have somewhere between three and six amalgam fillings.
As a rough guide, using the medium price:
Three medium fillings: £897
Four medium fillings: £1,196
Six medium fillings: £1,794
Plus the £169 first appointment.
Your own figure depends on the size of each filling, and you'll have it in writing before anything is booked.
Why "cheaper elsewhere" isn't always cheaper
When you compare prices, check two things.
First, whether the removal is charged separately. Some practices price the removal and the new filling as two items.
Second, whether the protocol is the full one. The SMART protocol means a rubber dam, high-volume suction near the mouth, a separate air supply for you, and protective covering, every time, for every filling. I'm the only IAOMT SMART Protocol Mentor in the UK, and I'm the only active Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology in the country.
Travelling to see us
Most of my patients aren't Londoners. If you send us your recent x-rays and a few photos first, I can often plan all your fillings for a single visit, which saves you a second journey. Here's how that works.
