These are the questions Liv and I get asked most, usually on WhatsApp, usually before anyone has booked a thing.
How many fillings can I have done in one visit?
This is the big one, so here's the honest answer.
Most people have between three and six amalgam fillings, and I can often replace all of them in a single sitting. What makes the difference is where they are.
The upper teeth are straightforward. With the lower jaw, I don't normally numb both sides on the same day. It leaves your tongue and lower lip completely numb at once, which is unpleasant and makes eating, drinking and even talking awkward for a few hours. So if you have fillings on both sides of the lower jaw, we may split those across two appointments.
Up to about five or six fillings, one visit usually works well. Beyond that it gets harder, and we'd normally plan two.
What do you need from me first?
Your most recent x-rays, from your own dentist, and a few clear photos of your teeth. With those I can see how many fillings you have, roughly how big they are, and where they sit. That lets me plan the day properly before you've spent a penny on travel.
If you don't have recent x-rays, we'll take them at your first appointment.
What if I need two appointments?
Plenty of our travelling patients come in on a Wednesday, stay the night, and I finish the rest on Thursday morning. One trip, two appointments, and you're home by lunchtime. There are other ways to arrange it too, and we'll work around your trains.
How long does it take?
It depends on how many fillings we're replacing and where they are. We book generous time so nothing is rushed, and we'll tell you the full length before you book.
Do you do the removal and the new filling on the same day?
Yes. The old filling comes out and the new one goes in, tooth by tooth, in the same appointment.
White filling or inlay?
Nearly always a white composite. The one we use is BPA-free and free of the classic monomers. For very large fillings I may suggest a ceramic inlay or onlay, because the tooth needs the extra support. More on costs here.
How much will it cost?
£199, £299 or £329 per tooth depending on size, with the removal included. Most are medium. The first appointment is £169, with x-rays included. Full breakdown.
What protection do you use?
The SMART protocol, every time: rubber dam, high-volume suction, a separate air supply for you, and protective covering. I'm the only IAOMT SMART Protocol Mentor in the UK and the only active IAOMT Fellow in the country.
Will I be able to eat afterwards?
Once the numbness wears off, yes. The white fillings are set hard before you leave.
Where are you, and how do I get there?
28 Harley Place, Harley Street, London W1G 8LZ.
