What Is a Biological Dentist?

Biological Dentist in London

An honest answer, from one

There is no such thing as a biological dentist, strictly speaking. There is no register, no protected title, no examination you sit to earn the word. Anyone in this country can put it on a website tomorrow morning.I use it because patients use it, and because it points at something real. But you deserve to know what it does and doesn't mean before you spend your money on it.

What it actually means

A biological dentist, or a holistic one, or an integrative one, depending on who you ask, is a dentist who treats the mouth as part of the body rather than a separate department. That sounds like a slogan. In practice it comes down to some fairly ordinary things.

Thinking about what goes in. Every filling, crown and implant is a material that stays in your body for years. Some people react to some materials. Choosing carefully, and being willing to discuss it rather than reaching for whatever the practice always uses, is most of the job.

Not putting mercury in. I do not place amalgam fillings. Nobody needs to, there are good alternatives, and the world is phasing it out anyway. The EU banned its use from January 2025 and the Minamata Convention has agreed a global phase-out by the end of 2034. Great Britain has no ban, only a 2018 restriction covering children under fifteen and pregnancy.

Taking it out carefully when it comes out. Drilling an old amalgam filling generates mercury vapour and fine particulate. There is a protocol for containing that, and I use it, every time.

Asking about the rest of you. Whether you sleep well. Whether you breathe through your nose. Whether you grind. Whether anything has changed in your general health. Not because a dentist can treat those things, but because the mouth often shows them first, and somebody ought to be looking.

What it does not mean

This part matters more, and you will not read it on many pages like this one.

It does not mean anti-dentistry. I trained conventionally at the University of Manchester and qualified in 2004. I use the same evidence everyone else does. Biological dentistry is not an alternative to dentistry, it is a way of practising it.

It does not mean unproven treatments. If something has not been shown to work, I am not going to sell it to you with a nice word attached to it.

It does not mean expensive for the sake of it. Prices are on the website. Have a look before you come.

The bit where I admit what we don't know

The link between the mouth and the rest of the body is real and the research is genuinely interesting. Gum disease and diabetes appear to influence one another in both directions, which was the subject of my own scientific review for the Academy. There is growing work on the relationship between oral bacteria and the heart, the joints, the brain.

But it is a field where the evidence is strong in places and thin in others, and where a lot of people online will tell you it is settled when it isn't. Some of what I find most compelling is still emerging. I will say so when that is the case, and I would be wary of anyone in this field who never does.

What I actually hold

Titles do not make anyone a good dentist. But since the word "biological" means nothing on its own, here is what does exist and can be checked.

I qualified from the University of Manchester in 2004 and have practised biological and integrative dentistry for over twenty years.

I joined the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology in 2015 and became Accredited in 2023. In September 2026 I was made a Fellow of the Academy, at their annual conference in Columbus, Ohio.

I am the only IAOMT SMART Protocol Mentor in the United Kingdom, which means I teach the safe amalgam removal protocol to other dentists.

I have removed more than ten thousand amalgam fillings.

What an appointment is actually like

We talk first. I look properly, not for ninety seconds. If you have questions about materials, or about what is in your mouth already and whether it matters, we go through them without any rush and without me steering you toward treatment.

A good number of my patients are not here about mercury at all. They are here because they are frightened of dentists. They have had a bad time somewhere, sometimes a long time ago, and it has never quite left them. Those are some of the best days I have at work.

I am from Liverpool, I am not remotely grand, and Harley Street is where the practice happens to be rather than a personality.

What it costs

A Signature Biological and Wellness Discovery, which is the first full appointment, is £169 and includes an x-ray.

Amalgam removal is charged per filling, not per quadrant: £199 for a small one, £299 medium, £329 large, each including the removal and the white composite that replaces it. A ceramic inlay or onlay is £895 where that is the better option.

All of it is on the prices page.
