Why I wrote it
For more than twenty years I've watched the same thing happen in the surgery. Someone sits in my chair with bleeding gums, and then, almost as an aside, mentions their blood sugar, their blood pressure, their sleep, their joints. Nobody had ever connected the two.Dentistry and medicine went their separate ways a long time ago. Different training, different buildings, different records. This book is my attempt to join them back up, for ordinary readers, in plain English.
What's inside
The book follows the links between the mouth and:
-the heart and blood pressure
-blood sugar and diabetes
-the brain
-the joints
-the gut
-hormones and the menopause
-sleep and breathing
It also covers amalgam fillings, and the simple daily habits that make the biggest difference.
A book about links, not miracle cures
I wrote it deliberately about associations and emerging evidence, and I say clearly where the science is strong and where it's still early. Every reference has been checked against the original research.
Who it's for
Anyone who has ever wondered whether their mouth matters beyond their smile. And every dentist, doctor, nutritionist and practitioner who wants to talk to the others.
