A dentist who looks up from the tooth

59739

"Holistic" gets used for all sorts of things, so let me tell you what I mean by it.

It means I don't just look at the tooth that hurts. I ask about your health, your medicines, your sleep, how you're eating, and whether anything else is going on. I look at your gums as carefully as your fillings. And I think about the materials I put in your mouth, not only how they look.

That's it. It isn't a rejection of modern dentistry. Everything I do rests on it. It's modern dentistry done with a wider lens and more time.

What that looks like in practice

-A longer first appointment. My Signature 18-Point Biological & Wellness Discovery takes time, and it's £169 with x-rays included. See what's covered.

-Metal-free dentistry. I don't place metal in anyone's mouth. Fillings are white composite, and larger repairs are ceramic.

-BPA-free materials. The composite I use is BPA-free and free of the classic monomers.

-Fluoride-free if you prefer. It's your choice, and I'm happy to talk it through.

-Clean air in the surgery. A dedicated air purification system changes the air in the room about 25 times an hour.

-Careful amalgam removal. If you want your old silver fillings replaced, I use the SMART protocol. I'm the only IAOMT SMART Protocol Mentor in the UK. More on amalgam removal.

-Gums taken seriously. Gum disease is common, often painless, and easy to miss. I check for it properly.

-Sleep and breathing. I ask how you sleep, and look for signs of snoring, teeth grinding and airway problems. Snoring and sleep.

-The jaw joint (TMJ). Clicking, aching or a tired jaw gets checked, not ignored.

-Nutrition. What you eat affects your teeth and gums, so we talk about it.

-Working with others. Where it helps, I'll suggest other practitioners, including nutrition and homeopathy, and of course your GP.

-Time. Nobody is rushed, least of all nervous patients.

What holistic dentistry isn't

It isn't a promise that dental treatment will fix problems elsewhere in your body. I'll never tell you that. The research linking the mouth and the rest of the body is growing and genuinely interesting, and I'll talk you through what it does and doesn't show. But I'll always be straight with you about where the evidence stops.

Who I am

I qualified from the University of Manchester in 2004 and have spent more than twenty years in biological and integrative dentistry. In September 2026 I was made a Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, and I'm the only active Fellow in the UK.
