If your heart sinks at the thought of a dentist's chair, you're not unusual. A lot of the people who come to me haven't been near a dentist for years. Some had a bad experience as a child. Some were made to feel judged. Some just can't bear the thought.

I think dental fear is the biggest barrier there is to looking after your mouth. So I've built the way I work around it.

The first appointment can be for talking. We get to know each other. I'll ask where you grew up, what you do, what's worrying you. I'll tell you a bit about me too.

Treatment comes when you're ready, not before.

You're in control

-You can stop at any time. We agree a signal before we start, and I stop when you use it.

-I sit lower than you, not looming above. It sounds like a small thing. It isn't.

-I explain as I go, in plain English, so nothing is a surprise.

-Nothing is rushed. I book enough time for you, and I give it.

Why it works

I've seen the same thing happen hundreds of times. Someone arrives convinced they could never have a filling. A few visits later, once there's trust, the work itself goes easily.

I think people can tell whether the person in front of them genuinely wants the best for them. That's the whole of it, really.
