Your jaw joint, the temporomandibular joint or TMJ, sits just in front of your ear. It works every time you talk, chew, swallow and yawn. When it's unhappy, you know about it.
Signs worth mentioning
-clicking, popping or grating when you open your mouth
-aching around the jaw, ear or temples
-a jaw that feels tired or tight, especially in the morning
-difficulty opening wideworn, chipped or cracked teeth
Looking for the cause
Jaw problems rarely come from nowhere. I look at:
-Grinding and clenching. Often at night, often without you knowing.
-Your bite. How your teeth meet.Sleep and breathing. Grinding and airway problems during sleep are often linked, which is why I ask how you sleep. Snoring and sleep
-Stress and posture. Both play a part for many people.
What usually helps
For most people, jaw problems settle with simple, gentle care, and that's where I start:
-soft foods and resting the jaw for a while
-awareness of daytime clenching
-warmth and gentle jaw exercises
-a custom-made splint to protect teeth and ease the load at night, where appropriate
If things don't improve, or if something needs a closer look, I'll refer you on to the right specialist.
When to get checked sooner
If your jaw locks, if you can't open or close your mouth properly, or if pain is severe or getting worse, get seen promptly.
