The Menopause and Your Mouth

59742

The menopause is talked about far more than it used to be. What's still rarely mentioned is what it can do to the mouth. I lecture on this, because so many women tell me nobody warned them.

Changes you might notice

-Dry mouth. Hormone changes are associated with less saliva, and saliva protects your teeth and gums.

-Burning mouth. A burning or scalded feeling, often on the tongue, is more common in women around and after the menopause.

-Gum changes. Gums may become more sensitive, bleed more easily, or recede.

-Taste changes. Some women notice a metallic or altered taste.

-Bone changes. Oestrogen helps protect bone, and the bone that supports your teeth is no exception.

Why it happens

Oestrogen receptors are found in the mouth, including the gums and salivary glands. As oestrogen falls, these tissues can change. How much varies a lot from woman to woman.

What helps

-Keep your mouth moist. Sip water through the day, and ask about saliva substitutes if dryness is a problem. Some medicines make dry mouth worse, so it's worth reviewing them with your GP.

-Be extra thorough. Less saliva means teeth are more vulnerable, so cleaning well matters more than ever.

-Don't ignore gum changes. Get bleeding or receding gums checked.

-Mention the menopause to your dentist, along with any HRT or bone medicines you take.

-Talk to your GP about menopause symptoms generally.
