1. Are you IAOMT accredited and SMART trained?
The IAOMT, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, is the body that developed the SMART protocol, the recognised standard for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. A properly trained dentist will hold genuine accreditation, not just a mention of it. Worth knowing: there's a difference between a dentist who has taken the training and one who mentors other dentists in it. A highest level is a SMART Mentor, someone the IAOMT trusts to teach the protocol to the profession. At the time of writing there is only one practising SMART Mentor in the United Kingdom. That's the level of expertise you're ideally looking for.
2. Do you use a rubber dam?
This is the simplest question with the most telling answer. A rubber dam is a thin sheet sealed around the tooth so that debris and vapour don't reach the rest of your mouth. It's fundamental to safe removal. If the answer is anything other than a clear yes, keep looking.
3. How do you capture the mercury vapour?
A good answer mentions high-volume suction right at the tooth, plus a separate external suction unit positioned beside your mouth to draw vapour away from your face. Copious water is used too, to keep the filling cool and reduce how much vapour comes off it in the first place. This is the machinery that actually protects you, so it's fair to ask about it directly.
4. Will I have clean air to breathe during the procedure?
Under the SMART protocol, you're given a supply of clean air through a nasal mask, so you're not breathing from the working area at all. It's a small detail that makes a real difference, and a properly equipped practice will have it as standard.
5. Do you protect your team as well as me?
This one tells you a lot. A dentist who takes mercury seriously protects everyone in the room, themselves and their nurse included, with barriers, gowns and proper ventilation. If they're protecting their own team to that standard, you know the care is genuine and not just for show.
