Travelling to London for Amalgam Removal

Most of my patients are not Londoners

There are perhaps a dozen dentists in the country doing this work to the IAOMT protocol, and they are not evenly spread. If you live in York or Cardiff or Inverness, your nearest one may be a long way off, and the honest answer is that a lot of people decide the journey is worth it rather than settle for someone nearer who does it casually.

So patients come to Harley Place from all over. Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Edinburgh, the South West, Northern Ireland, and a steady number from abroad. It is normal here, not unusual, and the practice is set up for it.

The journey changes how treatment is planned

This is the part worth understanding, because it is where most of the difference lies.

If you live twenty minutes away, there is no reason not to do a bit at a time. Come in, have one done, come back in a few weeks. Easy.

If you are coming from Newcastle, that pattern is miserable and expensive. Four trips, four train fares, four days off work. So we plan differently: fewer appointments, longer ones, and as much done in each sitting as is sensible for your particular mouth.

How much that is depends on the case, often done in one session.

How it usually works

First, a conversation. Before you book a train, ring or message. Tell us roughly what is in your mouth and where you are travelling from. A lot can be sorted out before you commit to anything.

Then the assessment. The Signature Biological and Wellness Discovery is £169 and includes an x-ray. It is a proper look at the whole picture.

Some people travel down for this on its own. Others prefer to have it done and then come back, and some want to combine it with the first treatment appointment if the case is straightforward. Say which suits you and we will try to make it work.

Then treatment, planned around your journey.

Appointments booked to fit trains rather than our convenience. Where several visits are needed, we try to space them so each trip earns its keep.

Practical things worth knowing

We are at 28 Harley Place, which is a two-minute walk from Oxford Circus and about ten minutes from Bond Street. Euston, King's Cross and St Pancras are all a short tube ride, and Paddington is fifteen minutes. If you are flying in, the Heathrow Express to Paddington is the simplest route.

Book the later train home rather than the earlier one. Appointments here run to time, but a rubber dam is not something to rush, and you will enjoy the day more if you are not watching the clock.

You will be numb for a few hours afterwards. That is perfectly compatible with sitting on a train and mildly incompatible with a big lunch.

Olivia answers WhatsApp and handles the booking. She is very good at working around journeys, so tell her what you are dealing with.

Why people make the trip

I am not going to pretend distance does not matter. If there were someone doing this properly on your high street, you should probably go there.

But this is a protocol where the detail is the whole point. Rubber dam. High-volume suction. A separate filtered air supply. Sectioning rather than grinding the filling out. Done properly it takes longer and costs more than doing it casually, and the difference is invisible to a patient in the chair, which is precisely why credentials are worth checking.

I am the only IAOMT SMART Protocol Mentor in the United Kingdom, which means I teach this protocol to other dentists, and in September 2026 I was made a Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. I qualified from the University of Manchester in 2004 and have removed more than ten thousand amalgam fillings.

If the whole approach is new to you, here is what a biological dentist actually is.

Ask before you book anything

Message us on WhatsApp or send an email. Tell us where you are coming from and what you are thinking about. No charge for asking and no chasing afterwards.
